Come along to our Gold Foil Embellishment workshop to learn how to apply gold foil to your pieces using the breathtaking ancient Korean technique of Keum Boo.
In this immersive four-hour course, you'll master the art of applying gold foil to your jewellery pieces, including essential preparation and finishing techniques. The results can be breathtaking, showcasing a striking contrast between delicate gold and fine silver. Alternatively, you can create a dramatic effect by blackening the silver through oxidation, making the gold truly stand out. The course fee includes a 3.5x5cm piece of 24ct gold foil, valued at £34. You have the option to bring your own pre-prepared work or purchase fine silver sheet on the day. This course offers a fantastic opportunity to enhance your jewellery making skills with this exquisite technique.
Rachael, who is one of our resident weekly tutors, creates stunningly beautiful work of her own, incorporating gold embellishment with techniques such as keum boo:
“My work reinterprets traditional ornament, taking inspiration from highly decorative styles throughout history. Within this I weave personal narratives and symbolism, allowing my discoveries and reflections to inform my decorative approach. I often work intuitively, marking out and piercing by hand, allowing myself to be absorbed in the flow of making. I take a maximalist approach to my work by layering up decorative surfaces and combining a mixture of techniques, etching, roller printing, keum boo, gold plating and oxidising. These combinations result in a richness and opulence, and what at first glance might look like a Greek headdress, or a baroque frame, on closer inspection is imbued with a contemporary aesthetic.”
