Round Collet Making
Round Collet Making
Friday 18th October 2024
10am - 5pm
Tutor: Stephen Barnett
£140 per person (includes silver blank and CZs)
Some jewellery making experience would be an advantage, and students should be confident using normal jewellery tools and equipment.
In this class we will be looking at professional techniques for making tapered round collets from sheet metal. Both with and without a collet block.
We will talk about how to measure the stone and map out the amount of metal needed to make a perfectly fitting collet before creating a template and forming the collet to the correct tolerances for setting.
We will be using traditional hand tools and techniques, improving your confidence and ability to make to exact specifications. By the end of the day you will have two finished collets ready for setting. We will also discuss the ways in which these collets can be used in pendants, rings and ear studs, and possibly have a go at cutting away parts of the collet to create claws, as another design option (if there is time).
These techniques can then be applied to designs to make a professional mount ready for stone setting.
All materials and tools for the class will be provided on the day with the option to order specialist tools after the class if required.
Experience required:
This course is designed for those with basic or intermediate jewellery making experience, wishing to build their knowledge of traditional mounting skills. Sme stone setting experience would be an advantage but not a requirement for the class.
