Square Collet Making
Saturday 19th October 2024
10am - 5pm
Tutor: Stephen Barnett
£140 per person (includes silver and CZs)
Some jewellery making experience would be an advantage, and students should be confident using normal jewellery tools and equipment.
In this class we will be looking at professional techniques for making tapered square shaped collets from sheet metal. We will talk about how to measure the stone and work out the exact amount of metal needed to make a perfectly fitting collet for this complex shaped mount before creating a template and forming the collet to the correct tolerances for setting.
We will be using traditional hand tools and techniques, improving your confidence and ability to make mounts for stones to exact specifications.
By the end of the day you will have a finished collet ready for setting, we will also look at making decorative cut outs in the form and how these effect setting. We will also discuss the ways in which these collets can be used in pendants rings and ear studs. These techniques can then be applied to designs to make professional mount ready for stone setting.
All materials and tools for the class will be provided on the day with the option to order specialist tools after the class if required.
Experience required:
The class is designed for those with basic or intermediate jewellery making experience, wishing to build their knowledge of traditional mounting skills. Some stone setting experience would be an advantage but not a requirement for the class.
