Some stone setting experience would be an advantage and students should be confident using normal jewellery tools and equipment.
In this intermediate course we are going to be looking into methods to make tools for traditional stone setting. Many people wishing to get into stone setting are put off by the fact you can’t buy the scorpers and gravers needed to set stones ready-made, instead you buy blanks that need shaping and sizing to the setter’s hand, which requires specialist knowledge and skills and can be daunting!
In this class we aim to make the grinding of these steel tools manageable and achievable. Under expert supervision you will learn to use a grinding wheel to shape the steel to your needs and sharpen the resulting tools to a professional standard. We will also look at heat-treating to harden and temper the steel, as well as making tools for removing porosity from castings. By the end of the day you will have a finished set of tools ready for use, plus the skills and confidence needed to make more tools of your own.
Some jewellery making experience would be an advantage and students should be confident using normal jewellery tools and equipment. We will be using a bench grinder so you must be happy to use this industrial equipment under supervision.
